New Tech Maps DNA-Protein Interactions in Single Cells - technology news

Scientists have developed a novel technology called D&D-seq that enables the mapping of DNA-protein interactions within individual cells, offering unprecedented insights into gene regulation. The research, spearheaded by investigators at Weill Cornell Medicine and the New York Genome Center, promises to advance understanding of complex biological processes and potentially inform new therapeutic strategies.

D&D-seq allows researchers to pinpoint the precise locations where transcription factors and other regulatory proteins bind to DNA, effectively revealing how these proteins control gene activity. Traditional methods often require analyzing bulk populations of cells, masking crucial variations that occur at the single-cell level. This new approach overcomes this limitation, providing a much more detailed and nuanced view of cellular behavior.

The technology’s “multi-omics compatibility” is a key advantage. It allows scientists to simultaneously integrate data from various molecular analyses – genomics, proteomics, and transcriptomics – within the same single cell. This comprehensive approach provides a holistic understanding of how different molecular components interact to regulate cellular functions. Researchers can now correlate DNA binding events with changes in gene expression and protein levels, leading to a more complete picture of cellular mechanisms.

The study highlights the potential of D&D-seq to address fundamental questions in biology, such as how cells differentiate into specialized types, how diseases develop, and how genes are regulated in response to environmental stimuli. The researchers anticipate that this technology will become a valuable tool for scientists across a wide range of disciplines, from basic research to drug discovery.
